The Coast Guard Museum in Marion, Arkansas, has a rich history dating back to 1916. The museum is dedicated to the history of the Coast Guard and its various branches. One of the most unique aspects of this museum are the collections of donated goods and equipment from Coast Guard stations around the United States. One of the earliest donation items was a set of flags made by John Farrand and Sons in 1915. This flag set was one of many donations that year from local businesses and individuals. Another donation that year was a lifeboat which had been lost at sea. This boat was given to the museum as part of a campaign to raise money for coast guard rescue operations. In 1916, another lifeboat was donated by Edwin Ladd. This boat had been used during World War I and had been sold for scrap metal surgery services. It was given to the museum as part of a campaign to raise money for coast guard missions during World War II. In 1921, another lifeboat was donated by Edwin Ladd Jr.. This boat had been used during World War I and had also been sold for scrap metal surgery services but it still remained in good condition with all its parts intact! It was given to the museum as part of a campaign to raise money for coast guard missions during World War II specifically targeting Japan’s military vessels operating off American coasts! In 1941, yet another lifeboat was donated by Edwin Ladd Jr.. This boat had also been usedduring World War I but it unfortunately sustained damage when it collided with an iceberg off Maine’s shoreline! It later served as an exhibit at The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum Of African American History And Culture before being returned hometo Marion, Arkansas in 1988! Since 1996, another donation has become synonymous with Marion – The “Sea Shepherd” vessel USCGC “Hickory”*. On July 8th, 1996, USCGC “Hickory”* became oneofthe first boats ever allowed into Japanese ports after navy warships stopped responding to requests from Japanese Fisheries officialsvarious times over Tokyo Bay!!! Marion, Arkansas is a small town located in Benton County, Arkansas. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock-Arlington metropolitan area. The economy in Marion is primarily agricultural and commercial. The first settlers in Marion were two families who arrived in 1820 from Kentucky. They built a cabin on the north side of the creek that flows through the town. The first store in Marion was opened by Wm. Haney in 1828. By 1840, there were six stores and two hotels in Marion. A post office was established here in 1847, and by 1860 there were twelve post office locations serving Mariontowns of which seven were within one mile of each other. By 1870, there were twenty-one businesses operating within one mile of Mariontowns and thirty-six businesses statewide with a total population of 2,456 people*. In 1880, iron ore production began to increase due to new mines being dug along the Arkansas River near present day Bentonville; this led to an increased demand for iron products throughout the state* (*See Census report for detailed statistics). In 1926, local farmers organized what would become known as “the Broadwood Association” to promote agriculture and improve conditions for farmers throughout Arkansas *. This organization later became known as ARDA (Arkansas Rural Development Administration). On December 12, 1837, the first U.S. Coast Guard Cutter was launched from New York City and became part of the Revenue Cutter Service. The cutter USS Ponce were transferred to the Coast Guard in 1938 and served until 1971 when they were decommissioned and sold to Spain as a merchantman. In 1974, Congress passed an act which established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in order to provide space exploration services including providing funds for research into manned spacecraft and rockets; developing technology for landing on Earth's surface; conducting research into oceanography, weather forecasting, air traffic control, navigational aids and equipment; maintaining scientific international collections of artifacts; serving as a facilitator for international cooperative programs involving United States agencies

A large cotton gin and other industrial buildings are still standing in the downtown area today.

The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Arkansas River and its access to timber and cotton resources. By 1900, Marion had a population of over 1000 people and was an important transportation hub for the area. In 1912, the town became a consolidated city with a population of over 3000 people.
