The United States Air Force deployed gift history in Marion, Arkansas on December 9, 1946. The air force presentation was made by Major General M. H. "Foghorn" Dean, USAF (Retired). The purpose of the gift was to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the United States Air Force and to celebrate the friendship and cooperation between America's military forces and our allies. The first U.S. Air Force unit stationed at Marion was the 5th Bombardment Squadron, which arrived on October 1, 1945 from RAF Upper Heyfordshire, England as part of Operation Crossroads. The squadron began operations out of RAF Hardwicke airfield on December 2nd1945 flying B-29s equipped with nuclear weapons for testing in Nevada and Arizona before being reassigned to Marion on December 9th 1945. In 1947 squadron personnel were also relocated to Bob Hope Airport where they continued their duties as a civilian aviation support squadron untilactivated inactivated on September 15th 1949 at Lackland AFB California after 55 years of service in American Skies! On January 6th 1951 Brigadier General Rufus Withers transferred command of I Troop Carrier Wing from MacDill AFB Florida to Marion AFB Arkansas effective date! This change markedthe beginning of an era that would see bilateral exchange programs increase significantly with both countries deploying more than 5000 soldiers into each other's territory during this period! A total of 24 bombers were retired from storage at various locations between 1951-1958! In 1957 Majestic Aircraft Corporation delivered its first jet aircraft - Lockheed L-7A1 "Eagle" - to the 527st Bombardment Squadron at Marion AFB! With this new acquisition came a corresponding expansion within wing activities including establishmentof Tactical Reconnaissance Group (TRG), later redesignatedFirst Tactical Fighter Group (FTFG) June 2057 activatedat Udvarhelyi Aviation refinery located adjacentto airport!! On November 8 1957 First Tactical Fighter Group(FTFG) became operational conventionally armed with P-47 Thunderbolt fighters!. By 1978 First Tactical Fighter Group had become known asAir Wing One assigned tou Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus providing combat related training assistance for local police forces throughout Illinois andIndiana under Federal law Title 10 USC ChAPTER 1155 et seq...This unique program is now known as fighter training annex/wingate since August 1989!!! Amassing nearly 4000 members by 1988 it had become one of largest air wings worldwide providing top quality Combat Training Assists while teaching USAF cadets basic skills necessaryfor future aerial warfare duty! The history of Marion begins with three men who settled there in 1881: Isaiah Witherspoon, James Stephenson, and Hiram Fenton. The town was named after General Joseph Marion who fought for the United States during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1906, a post office was established at Marion with Alfred Hargrave as the first supervisor. In 1970, when Pulaski County became a part of Arkansas, Marion became one of its first municipalities. Over time, it has continued to grow as an agricultural center with many businesses providing services such as food delivery or farm sales to residents throughout the county. In recent years, Marion has become known for its nightlife - including two annual music festivals and several annual arts events that draw artists from all over America and around the world to visit.

In 1871, Marion was a small town on the banks of the Arkansas River. It was founded by Texans who had come to Arkansas in search of new land to farm. The town quickly grew, and in 1911 it became the center of a cattle drive that brought over 1 million head of cattle to Kansas City. Marion residents were proud of their home town and its history. They preserved many of the community's core features, such as the downtown square with its large post office and grocery store, and the old blacksmith shop where they built their own rifles. The town also hosted annual agricultural fairs which attracted attention from around the country. In 1954, when Arkansas became an integral part of the United States, Marion became one of its first towns. Today, it continues to be a popular tourist destination, hosting events like rodeos and concerts during summertime.
The first white person to arrive in Marion was John Baptiste DeSoto, who came in 1837. He built the first cabin on the current site of town. The first school was built in 1840 and the first store in 1846. The town was named for General David Butler, who fought against Mexico in the Mexican-American War.
