The Little Rock Air Force Base has a rich and long air force deployment history. The base was established in 1941 as the Arkansas Aeronautics Laboratory, and it served as the home for many different types of military aircraft during World War II. In 1947, Little Rock AFB became one of the first bases in the United States to accept jet aircraft, and it continues to serve as an important hub for USAF operations today. These plants employed over 120,000 Americans during World War II; more than any other single employer in Arkansas alone. Arkansas was admitted to the United States as a state on November 6, 1836. The first official act of the Arkansas Territorial Legislature was to adopt the Constitution of Arkansas, which provided for a unicameral legislature and an executive branch with a governor. The Territory of Arkansas experienced significant growth during the 1840s due in part to irrigation projects authorized by President James K. Polk. By 1850, most of what is now Arkansas had been annexationced into the Union as Texas and Oklahoma did not join until 1907.
