Jonesboro, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Darlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jonesboro was founded in 1871 by John Dickson and his brother James Dickson as a small farming community on the east bank of the Arkansas River. In 1901, Jonesboro became the county seat of Pulaski County and remained so until 1907 when North Little Rock took over that role. The Town of Jonesboro was established in 1919 by J.D. Gentry and others as a rural municipality on what had been an agricultural district patented to him by his father-in-law A C Hawkins Jr.. The first election for town officials was held on November 3, 1919; incumbent Judge Fergus Ewing was reelected unopposed with 98% of the vote. Jonesboro experienced some growth during World War II; its population increased from 913 in 1940 to 14,944 during 1945-1946 (or 53% increase). Jonesboro was founded on December 3, 1872 by John Neely Bryan as a stop on his way to Memphis from Fort Smith. The town was named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest who had been killed two years earlier while leading an attack against Union forces near Crawfordville, Alabama. In 1875, President Ulysses S. Grant granted land to Bryan for $3 per acre (larger lots were sold at later dates). In 1895, Jonesborough Methodist Church was founded in what is now downtown Jonesboro by Reverend Jno Hoggins with assistance from Wm Ewart Keyes and Drayton Fenton Payne. The first post office opened in 1897 and remains open today serving residents of both incorporated and unincorporated areas within present-day Pettittown Township; it closed around 1960 due to competition from more developed towns nearby such as Little Rock and Arkadelphia.
