It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock-South Little Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jonesboro was founded in 1881 by early Arkansas pioneer and judge Isaac Hance Jones. The town's name comes from an Indian word meaning "a place where one can get water." The first store in Jonesboro was established by John Sheppard in 1881. A post office has been in operation here since 1884. In 1887, Samuel Tindal opened the first hotel in Jonesboro and served as its proprietor until his death in 1915. Mrs. Cofer also operated a grocery store for many years before it closed about 1960. Many of the early businesses were destroyed by fire or converted to housing during the Great Depression. In 1951, three people were killed when their car caught on fire while driving down Route 66 between Jackson and Arkadelphia; this event is commonly referred to as the " collided with tree" tragedy because two other vehicles were involved (one driven by farmer George Nichols and one driven by Roy Moore). Since then, Transportation Department restrictions have been placed on westbound traffic on I-40 across from Highway 6 to reduce accidents potential along that stretch of road; however, eastbound traffic still shares this section of I-40 at a steady rate despite the prohibition being put into effect decades ago due to collisions between cars travelling north/south on I-40 and motorists travelling east/west on Interstate 40 . In 1970, local man Don Frye discovered petroglyphs dating back 3 million years old near what is now known as "the Tombstone of Jonesboro". This discovery led to increased development around the area including construction of a shopping mall adjacent to University Park High School which opened in 1978; today's downtown area includes more than thirty buildings built over that time period including several original school buildings from 1922 which are still used today as library branches . This growth led to new problems such as loss of community character due to too much industrialization; however, recent efforts have included renovation and improvement of several historic landmarks within downtown such as The Michael Jepsen Theater which reopened after a $5 million renovation project completed in late 2013.
