Jonesboro is a city in Arkansas, United States. The population was 27,209 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jones County. The first European to visit what is now Jonesboro was Frenchman Pierre Le Moyne de La Salle in 1682 and he named it "Port-au-Prince", meaning " harbour of the Indies". In 1822, John C. Frémont surveyed the area and named it for General James G. Blaine, who had helped drive Mexico out of Texas during the Mexican–American War. The town site was chosen by General Blaine's aide, Major Samuel Prentice Johnson, on December 12, 1824 after consulting with local settlers. In 1831, Jonesboro became a station on the Central Pacific Railroad and soon developed into an important coal mining center because of its location at an important transportation junction between Iowa and New Mexico railways. Mining continued until 1911 when oil production began making Jonesboro an important commercial center again.
