The Jacksonville, Arkansas Army National Guard is one of the largest and most inclusive military units in the United States. The unit has been involved in operations all over the world, including service in both World Wars II and Iraq and Afghanistan. The Jacksonville, Arkansas Army National Guard unit was activated on November 15, 1935. The unit was originally part of the Arkansas National Guard and it was redesignated as the Jacksonville, Arkansas Army Reserve Unit on October 1, 1951. The unit was inactivated on December 18, 1957.
Jacksonville is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 10,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. Jacksonville is located in the Eastern Standard Time time zone and is part of the Memphis-Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered to the north by Little Rock and to the east by Fayetteville. The first white person to live in Jacksonville was James Waddell who arrived there in 1825 as part of wagon train from Illinois. The town was founded by Major General John C. Frémont on November 5, 1826 after he had withdrawn from Battle of San Jacinto and been driven out of Texas by Mexican forces under Santa Anna. Jacksonville became a county seat on December 30, 1836 when it fell to Pulaski County following its incorporation as a municipality. In 1886, Samuel Barnett built what would become known as Barnett's cotton gin on land now occupied by First Baptist Church across from downtown Jacksonville (now called "Old South Square"). The gin produced more than 20 million pounds (9 million kg) of cotton over a 45-year period – making it one of the largest cotton gins in America during that time period. On December 16, 1907, lightning struck an oil well near Jacksonport and caused an explosion that destroyed much of downtownJacksonport; this event is commonly referred to as "The Jacksonport Disaster" because it destroyed most if not allof downtownJacksonport before any relief could arrive aysto help protect civilians or rebuild infrastructure

This allowed people to travel much more easily and brought about new commercial opportunities for the city. The first post office opened in Jacksonville on May 26th, 1881. In 1907, Jacksonville built its first high school which later became known as University High School. On December 1st of that year (1907), it also served as the site for the first municipal election ever held in Arkansas with all citizens voting using secret ballots instead of open polls due to concerns over voter fraudulence during those days. That same year (1907), Hurricane Agnes struck northwestern Arkansas causing extensive damage and killing many people including many residents of Jacksonville who were left homeless during what would be known as one of history's most devastating natural disasters. -On October 15th 1922 Jaxsons announced they were going dry because they could not support their watermelons any longer; however there remain references toJacksonville being " Full o' Watermelon" even today
