It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–South Little Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Hot Springs was Daniel Boone in 1796. As a result of its strategic location on the Arkansas River, Hot Springs became an important trading and transportation center during the 19th century. In 1879, General John C. Frémont explored and mapped Hot Springs as part of his survey of western Arkansas for Ulysses S. Grant’s Union forces during the Civil War.
