Hot Springs, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 7,517 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The name "Hot Springs" comes from English General George Armstrong Custer's observation that when he asked the Sioux Indians if they had any place called "Hotspring", they Replies "No, we have no place called 'Hotspring'" The first settlers in Hot Springs were James and Jane Sprague who arrived in 1835. John Sprague founded Sprague & Company Merchants Bank in 1836 and opened a branch at what is now Broadway and Springdale Streets. In 1844, Isaac Davis purchased a tract of land east of present day Springdale Street from Edward Jones for $2,000. Davis built the first hotel in Hot Springs which he named Hotel Missouri on Vine Street between Second and Third Streets. In 1870 Harry Waddell sold his interest in Hotel Missouri to Fenton Hinton who operated it until its sale to Aiken Gillespie in 1912. Aiken Gillespie renamed it Old Fort Hill Inn after his home at 471 East Main Street where he resided most of his life while running the inn until his death in 1951. When Fenton Hinton died without heirs apparent, ownership passed to his son-in-law Coleman Gentry who operated it as an inn until it was donated by him to Pulaski County Historical Society on October 15th 1956 having been located adjacent to First Baptist Church since 1895 when it was dedicated as part of their fiftieth anniversary celebration program under direction of Mrsgrace Fowler then Director . Hotels near by began being rebranded beginning with two such examples being Green Hills Inn (now known as Renaissance) on North Main Street opposite Central Park Plaza before moving into other facilities such as Holiday Inn Express (now Choice) across Interstate 40 just north of I-10 Exit 139A about 2 1/2 miles east northeast of downtown Hot Springs when Interstate 40 became concurrent with US Highway 66 which led travelers directly into downtown soon thereafter making this location one large structure rather than scattered around various businesses needing only minor reconfiguration or conversion over time
Hot Springs is located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The community was named for the springs that flow through it. It began as a small log cabin settlement in 1885 and grew rapidly due to its natural resources and reputation for healing waters. In 1924, the first hotel opened in Hot Springs, and by 1926, there were over fifty businesses in the community. The population of Hot Springs reached 1,500 by 1930. During World War II, the town became an important air base because of its location on the eastern edge of Pulaski County. The post-war years were difficult for Hot Springs as economic development decreased jobs and residents moved away. By 1980, only a few businesses remained in the town and its population had shrunk to 350 people. However, during the 1990s and 2000s new development has occurred in Hot Springs with several high-end resorts opening up around it. Today, Hot Springs is an active tourist destination with multiple hotels and restaurants offering services such as spa treatments and golf courses
