The Arkansas National Guard was first organized in 1907 as the Arkansas Militia. In 1912, it became the Arkansas National Guard and was redesignated the Arkansas National Guard Infantry in 1917. The unit saw duty during World War I and World War II as part of both the American and British armies. After the war, it served as an adjunct to the Internal Security Service until its disbandment in 1969. In 1967, Congress passed a bill authorizing the national guard to provideWeapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) training to units in order to protect against potential terrorist threats. This led to the creation of two separate military arms of the Arkansas National Guard: The Special Weapons and Tactics Regiment (SWTR), which provided WMD training, and The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment (EODR), which provided chemical or nuclear munitions training. Since its inception,the Arkansas National Guard has played an important role in our state – from helping us celebrate Christmas every year with a jolly old firecracker display on Main Street in Hot Springs, to commending us for our countless accomplishments at local and statewide events such as parades and festivals. Perhaps most importantly, through its service members – many of whom have given their lives for our country – we've been able to maintain close relationships with our friends and family back home throughout these tough times.

The Arkansas National Guard was organized on November 1, 1892. The force consisted of a detachment from the regular army and had its first drill on December 12th. It numbered twenty-six members when it became part of the National Guard in 1917. On October 15, 1923, General John F. Cody relieved Colonel J.C. Bowen as Commanding Officer of the Arkansas National Guard and ordered all units to be divided into wings with brigades as divisions within wings and groups of companies with battalion commanders as brigade commanders. On October 24 Colonel Bowen was reinstated with his original command authority which he had exercised before taking command of the National Guard Bureau in 1921-22 under then Governor John Wickersham. Colonel Bowen's organization changed again on January 1st, 1927 when Brigadier General James Hanchett took command effective that date having served since May 1926 as Commander-in-Chief of both the Regular Army and Arkansas National Guard Bureau[1]. He combined duty for both commands until his retirement effective July 31st following a long career including service during World War I (1914-'17), World War II (1939-'45), Korean conflict (1950-'53), Vietnam War (1975‑79) and Desert Storm deployments in 1991‑92[2]. Since reorganization on January 1st 1927, there have been only three changes to Brigade/ Divisional commanding officers: 1) First Lieutenant Harry Crouch assumed command at headquarters unit periodical; 2) Second Lieutenant Don Averill assumed lead group duties at wing level; 3) Captain Phillip Ostroff assumed leadership position at division level on may 9th 1994[3].
Arkansas is known for its Hot Springs, which are located in the Ouachita Mountains. The springs were discovered by the Osage Indians in 1819 and were first used as a healing spa. In 1902, the Arkansas General Assembly passed a law that allowed women to use the springs for bathing and health purposes. By 1935, there were over 100 Hot Springs in Arkansas. Today, many of these springs are open to the public and offer hot water, showers, bathhouses, and saunas. The Springdale Chamber of Commerce has been providing information about Hot Springs in Arkansas since 1895.

Hot Springs is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,627 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–South Little Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live here were the Anasazi from Arizona and their descendants who founded Hot Springs in 1872. In 1907, General George Armstrong Custer died here and his skeleton still hangs from a tree near the springs. In 1912, President William Howard Taft was assassinated in Tombstone and his body lay nearby until 1934 when it was moved to Arlington Cemetery for burial purposes. In 1935, after much debate over whether or not to donate it to the National Park Service as a national monuments site because of its historical significance, Hot Springs became a national park under the National Parks Act of 1916. The name "Hot Springs" may be derived from Curly Bill (a water fowl), which frequents the area due to its hot spring waters that are purer than any other in Arkansas. Abraham Lincoln restocked these springs with new water supplies during his visit on July 4th 1865 while he was campaigning in this area. Today's economy revolves around tourism and mineral production; both industries have had an impact on Hot Springs' development throughout its history. The original hotel/motel complex opened in 1933 and remains one of only two buildings remaining from that time; it now functions as a museum open daily 9am-4pm (closed Mon). Other former businesses that remain include: A&W restaurant (which closed down in 1992), an ice cream parlor called "Dirt Candy", post office which served as an early movie theater (now used as evidence storage), laundry facilities for local farmers, and service stations serving gasoline, beer, popcorn., soft drinks etc.; all of which are open today for visitation or research purposes either by proprietors or members of staff! Today's most important attraction is undoubtedly the preserved remains of General Custer's famous campfire known as White Water Campground - located adjacent to State Route 191 just east of town on privately owned land - where visitors can tour reconstructed lodges built circa 1907-1911 using traditional Native American construction techniques including adobe walls and tepees without having to leave their cars!

The first school was built in 1886. By 1890, the town had a post office, theological seminary, and grocery store.In 1907, Hot Springs became an incorporated municipality. In 1916, the United States Postal Service moved its headquarters from Washington D.C., to Hot Springs. In 1925 the Arkansas State Highway Department began serving Hot Springs as well as nearby Pine Bluff and Little Rock.The population of Hot Springs reached 1,500 by 1951; it declined to 600 by 1970 but has since increased to over 10,000 residents today.
