Since the early 1800s, Hot Springs has been a military installation and home to various units of the U.S. Armed Forces. The first military deployment in Hot Springs was on July 4, 1876 when General George Armstrong Custer led his Seventh Cavalry Regiment from Fort Smith, Arkansas, on a punitive mission against southern Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians. The unit returned to Fort Smith on July 25th after completing its 12-day tour of duty. In 1903, the First World War began and the United States ordered 1 million rounds of ammunition for its forces stationed in Arkansas. On October 15th, 1903, Colonel James M. Reeves issued orders for the construction of an artillery battery at Fort Shafter in Hot Springs. The battery became known as Battery H (later Battery H&A) and was manned by soldiers from Texas who had volunteered to serve in Arkansas during World War I. On May 9th 1914, General John J Pershing relieved General Douglas MacArthur at Fort Worth Army Barracks and moved his headquarters toHot Springs where he continued command of all American forces in Southwest Africa until November 1916 when he retired from the army due to age impairment. During these years Hot Springs also saw service as Headquarters for Air Service Command under Major General Hugh Waddell who flew reconnaissance missions over Europe with his Lockheed P-38 Lightnings during World War II Some notable incidents during this time include: July 5 1943: destruction of Japanese airfield at Okazaki by Allied bombers; October 1942: Japanese surrender at Singapore; December 1941: Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor resulting in United States declaration of war against Japan
A few years ago, I was deployed to Kuwait as an infantry officer. I saw first-hand the devastation that military deployments can cause. The wastefulness of war, in my opinion, is on a whole other level than anything I’ve ever seen before. You see, when a war is fought with tanks and planes, somebody always wins. But when troops are Deployed to fight in undeveloped countries like Kuwait or Afghanistan, there is no victor. There are countless innocent people who have lost their lives due to the greed and stupidity of our military leaders. One thing that I found particularly interesting about my deployment was how senseless it all seemed. It seemed like every day there was another tragedy happening because somebody forgot to bring food or water for the troops. And then you have these huge battles going on in countries where there is no infrastructure whatsoever and the troops are fighting against insurgents who know nothing better than using civilians as human shields! What kind of world do we live in? I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to continue spending so much money on warfare without any real understanding of what we’re doing it for; besides making more wars ourselves (which will only result in more death and destruction). If we want to make a difference in the world, we need to start by learning about peacebuilding and how we can help out those who are suffering from War instead of contributing further unto their pain and misery.

Hot Springs is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 8,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Hot Springs was Wm. H. Storey, who arrived in 1868 and built a log cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1870 he sold his land to Jno. Aitken for $4 per acre (equivalent to $ ). In 1871 Aitken's son-in-law, James Fenton bought from Storey another piece of land along the river for $10 per acre (equivalent to $ ). He named it "Fenton's Falls". By 1880 Hot Springs had a post office and three stores. In 1881 Fenton subdivided his land into tracts and sold each one for $25 per acre (equivalent to $ ). Fenton organized what would become the towns of Hot Springs and North Little Rock. The first store in North Little Rock opened in 1886 by Wm. Sutherlin & Son under the name "The Gables" after its location on Main Street near present day Gadsden Elementary School; it was later renamed "The First National Bank." In 1895 an act was passed which gave Arkansas statehood; as a result, all local governments within Pulaski County were merged into that state government including Hot Springs Township which became North Little Rock Township within Pulaski County itself on January 1, 1897 effective with this date On July 20th 1898 ranches north of US Highway 82 were put up for sale encompassing most of today's eastern edge of town offering 640 acres (.27 km²) at an average price of $600/acre or .50/.75¢/ha or .00235/.28 hectares or just over 6 cents/acre (.02 hectare). As late as 1926 there still remained some unincorporated area eastward from US Highway 82 between Old Hickory Road and Center Street comprising about 3quarters (about 97%) of present day downtown business district containing residences dating back to before 1900 when most businesses were situated on commercial lots

In the 1920s, Hot Springs became an important military training center due to its location near White Sands Missile Range and other strategic sites. In the 1930s, Hot Springs became a popular tourist destination with its scenic outdoors attractions and hot water baths. By the early 1990s, however, local economic conditions had deteriorated and the community lost most of its population to moving out of state or leaving Arkansas altogether.

The first post office in Hot Springs was established on October 12, 1871, by Fenton Epps with the name "Eppsville". On February 14, 1875, the name was changed to "Hot Springs", after the Spring of Hot Springs near Asbury Park in neighboring Camden County. On July 1, 1907, Hot Springs incorporated as a town and received its own charter from Arkansas Governor John W. Harding. On December 5th of that year it became an independent city after being approved by voters via referendum. In 1941 Hot Springs became part of Little Rock through split decision of Pulaski County Commissioners over whether or not to become a municipality due to lack of funds for both cities combined. In 1957–58 Mayor Tom Alexander successfully petitioned the Arkansas General Assembly to annex portions of adjacent Faulkner County including parts of Hardin and Monroe Counties into Little Rock; this helped improve economic conditions within both cities so that they could merge into one municipality again effective January 1st 1959 under new leadership within Pulaski County Commissioner’s Office which included future Mayor Donnie Jernigan & City Manager Brent Ferguson who would keep all authority and responsibility for both municipalities until his retirement on November 30th 2002
