Hot Springs is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlement in what is now Hot Springs was made by the Delaware and Fort Smith Railroad on the south side of Spring Creek in 1874. A post office called Hot Springs was established in 1875, and remained in operation until 1907. The first recorded use of the present name "Hot Springs" came about 1850 when Major James Fenton named it after his hometown of Hotchkiss, England. In 1872, John S. Bowen founded a small trading post known as Bowensville near present-day Springdale and named it for himself and his wife Evalyn (Evelyn) Bowen; this name lasted until 1909 when it was changed to Hot Springs due to popular demand from residents living close by for a more specific geographical location for their spa baths and health resort. In 1870s there were two other springs nearby - Deer Cave on section 6 north of town and Catfish Hole on section 8 east of town - but they did not become major tourist attractions until later years because only one could be reached from each direction! So important were these two springs that when building began surrounding them with brick piers to create an artificial fall within which visitors could bathe – although no falls actually exist today – officials decided that all three springs should be given their own names: Deer Cave Spring (1871), Catfish Hole Spring (1879), and finally Hot Springs Falls (1907).
Hot Springs was founded in 1876 by A.P. Hill and his family as a small, independent community on the Arkansas River. The original town was charming but not very thriving, and it wasn't until 1887 when Hot Springs became an official post office with the name of Springdale. In 1925, hot springs became a municipal entity separate from Springdale with its own governance system and governing body known as the Board of Commissioners. The city of Hot Springs rapidly grew in size during this time, reaching a peak population of over 10,000 by 1938. However, World War II caused a significant decline in business activity as residents evacuated for military service; however, post-war growth resumed thanks to new businesses brought into town by postwar prosperity. Finally, during the late 1990s residential development began to take hold within Hot Springs proper as patronage declined for nearby towns with larger populations (such as Little Rock) which were experiencing rapid growth due to new oil discoveries offshore. As result of this recent growth among local businesses and homes alike, the population of Hot Springs has continued to grow since 2002 – now numbering over 20,000 residents!
