The history of the U.S. Air Force’s deployed gift program is long and complex. The program began in 1947, when the United States decided to send forces to Korea as part of the Korean War. At that time, there were no air force stationed in South Korea and therefore no way for the military to provide gifts or send them out with troops. To solve this problem, Assistant Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall directed the Department of Defense to start a Gift Program in order to send items such as cameras, radios, and books back home to servicemen and women who were serving in Korea. In 1951, the Department of Defense activated the first Marine Forces Expeditionary Unit (MEU) which was tasked with sending goods back home to Marines stationed overseas. This program was known as “Gift Squadron One” because it only sent items that were not perishable or too dangerous for delivery on land. In 1957, MEU Detachment 2 started shipping goods back home using a C-47 aircraft nicknamed “The Happy Home Hour” due to its frequent flights from Japan into South Korea during that time period. From 1951-1957, Gifts Squadron One sent over 1,500 shipments back home each month alone! During those years also saw the founding of several other detachments within Gifts Squadron One which handled everything from clothing donations through book donations and even toy donations during Children’s Services Month (March). These days we still hear about all sorts of interesting things that have been shipped through our squadron over the years including bicycles (to soldiers stationed at Camp Pendleton), prosthetic devices (for amputees), toys for special needs children (including a donated bike for an 8-year old boy who had lost his leg), guitars (for kids in Guam), flowers (!), candy bars (!), etcetera! It is truly an amazing history when you think about it!

Hot Springs is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,261 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock– AR Combined Statistical Area. The first people to live in Hot Springs were the Creeks and Hartsfields. In 1875, Colonel John Wesley Galloway developed what is now called Galloway's Park and built a hotel on it. In 1887, Dr. J.C. Hill opened an opium dispensary here. By 1912, Hot Springs had become one of the leading tourist destinations in Arkansas for its mineral springs and unique features such as its artificial hilltop spa known as "the Crown Jewel." In 1933, Hot Springs became an incorporated city with a mayor and council system under which it continued to operate as a municipally owned municipality until it merged into Little Rock on January 1, 2006; Little Rock also took over all local services including firefighting and library operations within Hot Springs' borders (though some essential functions continue to be provided by both municipalities). During World War II, many civilians living near Fort Chaffee were taken into detention camps located outside of Hot Springs while Japanese-American citizens inside of the city were interned without due process or any legal rights whatsoever; many residents who could have been Freedomsighters were instead arrested or incarcerated because they refused to betray their friends or fellow citizens to the Japanese military forces during wartime. The total number of people detained within Hot Springs during World War II remains unknown but likely reaches into the thousands given that much evidence exists linking individuals from throughout Pulaski County specifically with Japanese-American incarceration/internment during that time period not just from Hot Springtown itself
