Hope, Arkansas is an American small town in the Ozarks region of central Arkansas. It is located on the White River, east of the city of Fayetteville. The population was 1,591 at the 2010 census. Hope is home to a large military base and two major universities: Hope University and Central Arkansas University. The town was founded in 1871 by settlers from Ohio and Indiana who were looking for a place to live free from Indian slavery. The name "Hope" is derived from a local creek that drained into Little Rock Creek near where the town now stands. One of the first gifts given by the Coast Guard was a baguette from New York City’s Union Hall. In 1903, a crossbow was given as a gift to officers in Long Island. From 1941-1945, coast guard personnel received Christmas gifts such as radios and cigars from President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1955, a model boat was gifted to both service members and civilians on Long Island harbor. A Officer Candidate School graduation present in 1967 included an automatic shotgun! Hope, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,275 at the 2010 census. Hope had its start in 1865 as an unincorporated community on the banks of the White River. A post office was established there in 1867 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. Hope's history can be traced back to when white settlers first arrived in what is now Pulaski County. They were attracted to the fertile soil and easy access to water that Hope offered. In 1865, a group of men from Illinois led by John Wesley Hardin founded a community named Hope on the banks of the White River near present-day Arkadelphia. The community quickly grew and soon had a school, store, and hotel built. In 1868, another group of pioneers arrived from Missouri and renamed Hope after their home state; this time it stayed permanently established with a courthouse and jail built along with many other businesses and houses. By 1875, Hope had become one of the most important communities in Arkansas due to its location, population growth, and river access. Hope experienced some tough times during its early years though; for example, an railroad line was proposed but never built because of concerns about nearby townsfolk being destroyed by trains heading eastward towards Memphis or Washington D.C.. However, through hard work and sacrifice by everyone involved – including local farmers who donated land for the construction – Hope eventually emerged as one of Arkansas' most successful small towns; even gaining national attention when it became host to both the Miss America pageant (which took place at Little Rock's Kemper Auditorium) and World Championships Wrestling (then called "The Olympics"). Despite all these successes however - including some devastating events like Hurricane Agnes which caused extensive damage to parts of town - residents remain passionate about their hometowns past while looking forward to their future together just like so many others aroundthe country have done over recent decades.
Hope, Arkansas was a townsite located in the Ashley County area of central Arkansas. The land that is now Hope was first organized as part of the Shawnee Indian Nation tribal territory by treaty in 1824. The town site was surveyed and named in 1836 by A.P. Hill, one of the original commissioners to survey and plat the Territory of Arkansas. Hope's first settler, John Jourdain, arrived there on July 10, 1837.
