The community was named for Helena Moultrie (1851-1927), wife of General John T. Moultrie (1793-1885). Ulysses S. Grant visited Helena West Helena on July 14, 1881 while on his way from Hot Springs to Fort Smith, Arkansas after being elected president that year.
