National Guard gift history in Harrison, Arkansas goes back to the early 1800s. The first national guard unit was organized on November 15, 1821 and served until December 1, 1825. At that time the Arkansas National Guard was created as the second regiment of state militia. It consisted of twelve companies drawn from different counties in central Arkansas. The first commander of the National Guard in Harrison was Colonel David Witherspoon. He served from 1824 to 1829 and then became adjutant general for the state militia under Governor Thomas Rector. From 1830 to 1831 he also served as colonel of the Third Regiment of Infantry and later commanded that regiment during the Mexican-American War. In 1835 Colonel Witherspoon resigned his commission to become a farmer in western Arkansas. In 1840 General James Kenedy led an expedition against Mexico at Palo Alto Rancho de las Palmas which resulted in the Battle of Palo Alto Creek where two hundred Texans were killed and four thousand Mexicans were captured. A year later General John Fetterman led another Expedition against Morelos which resulted in engagements at Buena Vista Creek, Chapultepec Pass and Monterrey River Bridge where one thousand soldiers were lost including three generals who died with Fetterman: Gouverneur Kossuth (Mexico), James Polk (Ulysses S Grant) and Antonio Lopez Martinez (Pablo Escobar). After this engagement General Fetterman returned home after successful operations against Mexican rebels under Santa Anna's command known as The War With Texas or The Alamo Campaign . During this time there were two other major events that affected Harrison; One was when Captain Samuel Ivey established a trading post on what is now State Route 9 North near present day Harrisonville; This post lasted until 1790 when it was burned by Indians during a hostilities period known as Pontotoc Trail War; Secondly, on October 15, 1850 Union soldiers marching through town while looking for Confederate forces coming down THE HARRISON ROAD turned up at what is now State Route 161 which linked Bentonville with Fort Smith Adobe Presidio just east of town limits today’

The Harrison National Guard was organized on December 15, 1922. The unit was activated on December 18th and served as a guard force until May of 1933. It then served as an auxiliaries to the Arkansas National Guard from March of 1933 to November of 1934. The National Guard was again mobilized on February 14th, 1935 and served in the area around Little Rock until September of that year. On October 1st, 1935, it was redesignated the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department and continued service until July 1st, 1938 when it became part of the Arkansas State Police.
Harrison is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 21,790 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. Harrison is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–AR Combined Statistical Area. The community was named for General Andrew Jackson Harrison, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as U.S. Commissioner at Vera Cruz from 1846 to 1849. In 1881, Harrison's post office was moved to what is now downtown Harrison from an original location near the river on State Street (now Wilkinson Boulevard). The first postmaster general of Arkansas, James Wickersham, also lived in town during this time. Harrison has two high schools: Northwest Arkansas High School and Northwest Arkansas Junior/Senior High School (NWJHS), both of which are located within its boundaries. Harrison had a small railroad station that served local farmers until it closed in 1952; however, today there are several businesses and residences located along Wilkinson Boulevard that serve as reminders of the town's past rail connection. In recent years, much progress has been made to revive downtown Harrison with many projects such as a new library and arts complex complete or under construction including a50-foot tall water tower that will provide energy for home heating and cooling systems; renovation and expansion of all three churches in town; addition of five story buildings to NWJHS which will house classrooms/universitylevel courses; restaurant/bars/nightlife area adjacent to NWJHS; ground floor retail side streetscape redevelopment project completed by developers having renovated existing businesses into large mixed-use buildings with anchors such as Target & Home Goods stores on one side while restaurants like Longhorn Steakhouse & Brewpub occupy other sides Streetscape redevelopment project completed by developers having renovated existing businesses into large mixed-use buildings with anchors such as Target & Home Goods stores on one side while restaurants like Longhorn Steakhouse & Brewpub occupy other sides There are also plans underway for another 5 story building on Wilkinson Boulevard called The Place which will be used mainly for apartments but could feature live music venues etc...

The regiment was made up of men from New York City and other parts of the Northeastern United States who had volunteered to fight for their country during the American Civil War. In 1871, Colonel Lyon organized an additional regiment, the 2nd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which became part of the Regular Army after it invaded Mexico in 1847. The Guardsmen were also given special privileges and insignia such as red shoulder patch and white cockade (a symbol representing loyalty to America). During World War I, some Guardsmen served in Europe while others fought on home soil. After hostilities ended, many Guardsmen continued their service in various capacities until 1946 when they were redesignated as Full-time Reserve Officers Training Corps (FTROC). In 1952, FTROC was renamed as The National Guard Bureau (NGB). Today, NGB oversees all national guard gift gifting activities including procurement and distribution of gifts to units across the United States.
