John Harrison had been working at his brother’s farm when he decided to start his own coffee shop. By 1902, the Harrison Coffee Company had opened a retail store on Main Street in Harrison. The highlight of the early years for the company was their production of Turkish Koffee – an aromatic blend of ground up propriety Turkish spices with ground roasted beans – which was sold under two main brands: Starr Bros., which was owned by John Starr, and Hennepin Bros., which wasowned by Harry Hennepin. In 1916, John died suddenly while traveling to Istanbul to purchase some special spices needed for export; his widow Lillie took over ownership of the business and continued growing it under her own name until her death in 1949. At Lillie’s death, she left behind an asset worth more than $2 million dollars (according to 2016 estimates). She is considered one of the most successful female entrepreneurs ever born in Arkansas. In 1936, after Lillie’s passing, her son Edwin bought back control of the business from Harry Hennepin Jr., who had retained some ownership rights since 1916 despite selling all his shares two years earlier to Edwin himself for just $100K ($4 million today). During World War II, Edwin served as Director of Aircraft Production at United Airlines where he contracted with Chubb Corporation to provide Boeing 707 jumbo jets engine parts from local farmers during war shortages (Edwin later served as chairman emeritus at United Airlines until 2014).
