The Arkansas National Guard has a rich history that dates back to the early days of Fort Smith. The first national guard unit was organized in 1881 and served with distinction in the Mexican-American War. The unit was redesignated as the 1st Arkansas Infantry Regiment in 1899 and played an important role in World War I. After the war, the regiment underwent several name changes before becoming known as the Arkansas National Guard in 1947. The Arkansas National Guard was organized on July 1, 1907. In 1912, the National Guard was redesignated the Arkansas Army National Guard and on November 1, 1916 it became the Arkansas National Guard Infantry Division. On May 15, 1917 the Division was reorganized as an infantry regiment and on October 16 of that year it became a brigade. On February 14, 1921 the Brigade became a division and on September 12 of that year it became an army corps. The Division was disbanded on January 28, 1948.
Fort Smith is a city in the Ozarks of Arkansas. The population was 3,871 at the 2010 census,[1] making it the third-largest city in Arkansas. It is located on the Arkansas River south of Little Rock and north of Fayetteville. The first permanent settlement in what is now Fort Smith dates back to 1819 when General John Custer and his forces retreating from Lawrence County attacked a group of Shawnee Indians. The fort was built by Colonel George Catlett isolated on a bluff overlooking the river near present day Fort Smith Boulevard and Elm Street. In 1835, General Andrew Jackson's Expedition against Mexico destroyed most of the Mexican arsenal at Churubusco, causing an economic depression in Fort Smith which forced Catlett to sell his land to Nathaniel Bogan for $5,000.[2] In 1836, Major James K. Polk arrived with 1,200 men during Indian War II seeking revenge for Santa Fe's Massacre two years prior. After several daysof skirmishing they discovered no Mexican troops were available so they continued their march upriver towards Fayetteville HL but were cut off by General William Hutton's cavalry while en route. On July 5th they reached the town limits after crossing ange (now Bull Shoals) river[3] and found themselves under fire from American militia homes which had been abandoned as defense against possible attack by Mexican forces nearby waiting to ambush them should they retreat or cross into Mexico proper. A company of Ulysses S Grant's Seventh Illinois Infantry led by Lieutenant James Ewing crossed over Bull Shoals Bridge about 4pm on July 6th and drove off all Confederate defenders who had taken refuge inside American homes only to find 400 Mexican soldiers entrenched around town numbering 10 cannons manned by 100 infantrymen! The engagement lasted three hours with local militia forcing 400 Mexicans out across four bridges before withdrawing at dark without losing any men; this event has been called "the greatest military victory ever fought outside Americas borders".[4][5][6][7]
