After serving tours of duty throughout World War II they were redesignatedin 1951 as 3rd Battalion Alaskan Malamutes (later 4th Infantry Regimentforthe Arkansas National Guard). Frémont on October 20, 1837 as a trading post on the Arkansas River near what is now downtown Fort Smith. The first store in Fort Smith was opened by Isaac Berry on December 12, 1837. At that time there were only150 residents living within the present-day city limits of Fort Smith and it was not until 1847 that a courthouse and jail were built inside the present day city limits to serve the burgeoning community. On November 7, 1849, Fort Smith became an organized town when all of Pulaski County formed one entity under the name of "Fort Smith." On July 1st 1865, after Confederate forces destroyed most of Clarksville and other key points along the Cross Timbers Campaign during their May 3rd Offensive across much of northwest Arkansas Lieutenant Colonel Robert Ewells ordered his regimental commander Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest to move against Union positions around forts Fayetteville and Jonesborough northeast of Little Rock with orders to destroy any Union installations found therein before reaching those forts. When they reached Ft Smith they discovered that most all army stores had been destroyed as part of this campaign so they burned most everything including all but six cannons which they captured intact prior to retreating back into Arkansas
