Fort Smith is the capital of Arkansas and the largest city in the state. The city is located on the eastern bank of the Arkansas River, about 25 miles north of Little Rock. The history of Fort Smith began with a mission from Spanish missionaries in 1814. The fort was built by General James Wilkinson during the Mexican–American War to control trade along the river mouth from Mexico. In 1836, General Bradley captured Fort Smith and burned it tothe ground after its defenders surrendered. Afterward, Wilkinson rebuilt the fort and named it for himself, becoming one of Arkansas’s first native sons. In 1861, during Confederate Kansas raids into Missouri, Fort Smith garrisoned troops to prevent any enemy crossings into central Arkansas. However, due to Union artillery fire that destroyed most of cornfield east of town on November 11th 1861, little damage was done to Forts Worth or Wilson until 1863 when Union troops arrived following Missouri’s admission into the Union as a separate state. A year later on February 14th 1865 Confederate Lieutenant Colonel John Sledge bypassedFort Smith while raiding Tellico Creek Bridgehead and raided local stores at Honey Grove before being pursued back to Ft Pickens by Federal forces under Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest The American Civil War began on April 12th 1861 when Confederate Forces attacked brief Federal outposts at Pea Ridge within striking distance of Cairo (Ft Scott). Fort Smith was founded in 1836 as a ranch town on the Arkansas River. Today, Fort Smith is the capital of Arkansas and a major city with over 100,000 residents. The city was named for General Andrew Jackson, who served as its first mayor. The early Fort Smith settlers were primarily Cherokee and Indian workers who had come to work on the fortifications of New Orleans during the Mexican-American War. After Mexico lost possession of Texas, many Mexicans and Texans moved into Oklahoma Territory in what is now Fort Smith County. In 1838, the U.S.Army built a military post at Fort Smith to serve as an artillery depot for troops moving up the Arkansas River to fight against Mexico. This fortification helped make Fort Smith an important transportation hub for goods arriving from Kansas and Missouri during the 1850s slave trade boom in northwest Arkansas. During Reconstruction following Reconstruction South America experienced dramatic social changes with increased violence and economic instability caused by white racism and discrimination against African Americans. The arrival of black soldiers in American armies added fuel to this social fire by providing men willing to fight for white allies against black rebels. As African Americans began working their way up through American society, they encountered racism both inside and outside of government institutions such as businesses, schools, churches, sports teams, and other organizations catering to whites only. This type of discrimination led some African Americans to form paramilitary groups known as “Black Pits” or “Negro Ghetto Defense Units” (NGDUs). Thanks in part to these activities Black Pits mobs terrorized local whites throughout much of eastern Arkansas until federal forces arrived in 1865 to suppress them In 1870 Union Pacific Railroad built a line linking Chicago with points northward including Ft Worth (now Dallas) via Little Rock; this new line created a demand for goods brought downriver from east Texas by railroads which would then be transported south along I-30 or US-66 onto barges bound for Jacksonville or Mobile Bay before being delivered directly into downtown Ft Worth via river towpaths As more goods became available downstream from Wichita Falls throughLittle Rock then east Texas due largely to new railroad construction there was also an increase in demand for water rights along I-30/US-66; this led eventually to development around Fayetteville/AR City Lake that today includes much upscale housing developments
