Fort Smith was founded in 1836 by James K. Polk and David Ziegler, two Missouri men who had come to the Arkansas Territory as surveyors. The town grew rapidly because of its location on the Arkansas River, which made it a convenient transportation center for goods and people. By 1840, Fort Smith had a population of 10,000 people. In 1846, Fort Smith became the capital of the new territory of Arkansas. It was here that President James K. Polk delivered his famous inaugural address in February 1849. The city experienced another Boom Period during the 1850s when cotton prices rose and jobs were available in the mills. However, this period also saw some instability as cattle drives got out of control and violence broke out between settlers and Indian tribesmen. The Civil War began in 1861 and ended in 1865 with Confederate victory over Union forces at Vicksburg Peninsula outside Mobile, Alabama. Fort Smith’s fortunes changed after this battle as Abraham Lincoln called on General Ulysses S. Grant to take command of all military operations in Arkansas until he could be properly trained for leadership at Fortress Monroe on Virginia’s Eastern Shore (now Arlington County). Lincoln then sent General Nathan Bedford Forrest to lead an army against Fort Smith – one of America’s most successful landings ever – but Forrest was decisively defeated at Little Rock on October 14th 1862; losing more than 2,000 men while inflicting little damage to the fortifications or civilian structures within range of his artillery fire! After this debacle, Lincoln ordered General John Pope to take command of all military operations in Arkansas until he could be better equipped for leadership at Fortress Monroe again on Virginia’s Eastern Shore! This order finally arrived at Fort Smith on December 1st 1862; only four weeks after Forrest’s defeat! On January 5th 1863 American troops captured Confederate general Robert E Lee while he was departing from Dallas County towards Huntsville with his army encamped near present-day Fayetteville (modern day Little Rock). Fort Smith continued to grow quickly through the 1860s despite periodic warfare between Native Americans and white settlers; however, by 1870 it had reached its peak with a population of 25,000 people living within its walls plus an additional 11,500 residents who lived inside what is now Arkadelphia counties east of downtown FortSmith.(1) Military activity diminished thereafter as Union forces moved into central Texas instead; however sporadic raiding did occur into eastern Arkansas until 1898 when Spanish flu decimated much rural farming communities throughout much parts northwest Mexico.) In 1890 FtSmith passed from under Federal jurisdiction back under State control becoming known as “Arkansas City(2)
Ft. Smith was founded in 1821 by Captain William T. Sherman and the 2nd Battalion of the Arkansas Infantry Regiment as a trading post on theoots River east of what is now Fort Smith. The site became an important military outpost during the Indian Wars, and Sherman named it after his old home town of Moline, Illinois, which he had visited while on service with the U.S. Army in 1811-13. The post attained its present form in 1836 when it was transferred from Fort Gibson to Ft. Smith under General Andrew Jackson’s orders as part of a larger strategic move to consolidate all American forces in West Texas against Mexico’s expanding empire. At its peak, Ft. Smith housed more than 10,000 troops and civilians and served as the main depot for goods arriving from all over the United States and Mexico City. In 1944 it became a base for Operation Overlord, the Normandy landings which led to World War II
