The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Fort Smith, Arkansas has been a part of the community since 1922. In 1935, Captain John Pritchard assumed command of the fort Smith coastguard and continued its traditions of providing coastal security for Fort Smith residents and visitors alike when he founded Ft Worth Beach Patrol which patrolled Ft Worth beach for violators of city ordinances. In 1951 Captured Bill Baker became one of only two officers ever to be decorated as an Officer Commendation by President Harry S Truman for his actions during Operation Neptune’s Spear which marked United States entry into World War II
