Fort Smith, Arkansas is the capital of Arkansas and the largest city in the state. The population of Fort Smith was estimated to be over 300,000 in 2010. The city is located on the Arkansas River and has a humid subtropical climate. The metropolitan area of Fort Smith had a population of over 1 million people as of 2017. The first European to visit what is now Fort Smith was Father Gabriel de Montoya on December 21, 1776. At that time, the area was known as present day Arkadelphia because it lay along the route then traveled by Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto when he explored North America during his expedition in 1540-1542. In 1811, Fort Gibson was built to protect traders travelling downriver from Indian raiders. In 1827, Fort Gibson became part of what would become Little Rock; however, it wasn’t until 1830 that Little Rock became an independent town under Federal jurisdiction. In 1832, Ft Smith was named for General Andrew Jackson who had been elected president that year and whose army had fought at Texas Revolution and Battle of Pease Field against Mexican forces near New Mexico City (now El Paso). Upon his inauguration as President on March 4th, 1833, Jackson ordered that all military stores and barracks be moved from Washington County to Ft Smith so that they could be used more effectively during his term as president. As a result of this order, many jobs were created in Ft Smith and its surrounding communities during Jackson’s presidency which helped keep the city moving forward despite difficult times during the Panic Of 1837 which caused widespread economic decline throughout much of Great Britain and Ireland simultaneously.. Following George Washingtons death in 1865 after serving four terms as Ulysses S Grant’s Vice Presidential running mate (1865-1868), Memphis took control of mostofficial government functions within Tennessee due to lack thereof following Tennessee secession from Union on April 12th 1861; howeverArkansas remained an official US Territory pending annexation by Texas on February 14th 1865 after Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House with all his papers & equipment including cannons & horses etc…. On January 3rd 1886 Ft Worth A post office opened at what is now Little Rock & soon afterwards Ft Worth established their own Post Office here also….. By 1902 Ft Worth had outgrown its original site so new buildings were erected downtown…..Today all three post offices are located inside downtown Ft Worth……… Arkansas Revised Statutes § 20-2-101 (2010) As stated above, FortSmith has been home to many federal agencies since before it became an incorporated municipality within Arkansas: these include both military stores/ barracks utilized during Andrew Jackson's presidency – these were eventually moved northward into current day FortSmith proper – while also hosting various other governmental offices like those aforementioned through incorporation or other forms until 1907 when little real progress was made prior to federally purchased land redevelopment happening municipally again starting around 1909 followed by assorted annexations leading up until 1957 when finally everything went back under Federal jurisdiction once again…. It should be noted too that Arsenal Ordnance Plant – situated just eastwest across Interstate 40 adjacent to I-10 between Little Rock & ARKANSAS CITY proper – functioned simultaneously as both a federal armaments manufacturing plant (& later electronics manufacturing plant) forboth local production (& export) under Army control (& Army infrastructure support) beginning circa World War II thru present day although currently being leased out for industrial purposes only
