It was open on Main Street in downtown Forrest City. In 1945, The Grapes of Wrath closed its doors after only six months because it didn't make enough money. But that wasn't the end of the coffee business in Forrest City- before that, there were five other cafes throughout downtown that served delicious cups of Joe every morning. Today, there are over thirty businesses serving up delicious cupcakes and java for those who love caffeine and good food! Forrest City, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–East Stroudsburg, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The early history of Forrest City is unknown but it likely began as a small community near the center of the county. The first post office was established in 1867 and by 1870, Forrest City had a population of about 60 people. In 1881, when Pulaski County was created from parts of Crawford and Benton counties, Forrest City became one of its original townships. In 1902, Forrest City voters passed a resolution to establish a townhall for the community which would be located on Main Street between Van Buren and First streets. The first meeting took place on November 10th and consisted of Mayor J.W. Ferguson (term expired), Vice-Mayor Wm Hines (term expired), Aldermen John Pritchard (term expired) and Ozzie Brown (new term). On December 1st 1901 an election resulted in four new members being elected to thetown board: Aldermen Jno Stephenson (term expired), Fayette Dixon (term expired) and James Buchanan (freshman term). At this time there were only two buildings in town – the courthouse and store building – that were used for village business rather thanresidential purposes. Although some residents objected to having theirown town hall built they ultimately agreed to its creation because they felt it would provide them with better services than what could be provided bythe county board or other municipal entities at that time. The first sessionof thetown board met on January 9th 1902 and Nellie Tuggle served as chairwoman due to her elevationto Circuit Court judge position vacated by Valentine Fleming who had been elected mayor pro tem duringthe previous year’s campaign cycle. That same year saw also Significant events withinthe village including Mayor Ferguson’s marriage to Edna Gentry on October 15th; incorporation of thoastler company name “The American Legion Post #5”; constructionofa paper mill; opening day for local ice cream parlor “ cones & coke” operated by Mrs Greenburg;and establishment of department store chain “Pants One Stop” managed by Mrs Beavers at 730 Main Street known thensimply as “The Store”
