Fayetteville is a small city in Arkansas, located on the Arkansas River. The population was 9,823 at the 2010 census. It is home to Barnes Air Force Base and Fayetteville State University. Fayetteville was founded in 1836 by James K. Polk as an outpost on the Arkansas River for General Andrew Jackson's invasion of Texas. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s, thanks to its location on a bend in the river and its position as a transportation hub for goods moving westward from Missouri and eastward from Texas. In 1851, Fayetteville became capital of Arkansas Territory; it remained so until 1907 when Little Rock took over that role. During Reconstruction (1865-1913), Fayetteville played an important role in the struggle against Jim Crow laws in Arkansas and across America. In 1915, Mayor John Witherspoon proposed building a new state Capitol in downtown Fayetteville; the proposal was approved by both houses of the Arkansas legislature but never carried out due to financial difficulties. In 1970, Interstate 40 crossed through downtown Fayetteville; traffic congestion caused many businesses to move out of town and led tothe abandonment of many downtown buildings including City Hall and United States Post Office (now known as Omni Hotels & Resorts). However, new development has continued to take place around I-40 throughout Downtown FayetteVILLE since then - most notably along Elm Street adjacent to Barnes Air Force Base which has seen significant growth over recent years with several large projects completed or under construction such as Hansen Waterfront Park and Amazonian Way Campus redevelopment project which are scheduled for completion 2020/21!
