Fayetteville, Arkansas is a city located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 74,814 at the 2010 census. Fayetteville is the county seat of Pulaski County. It was founded in 1827 and named after General James A. Fayette, who served as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia during the American Revolution. The city's zip code is 82012. Fayetteville was platted on October 24, 1827 by fur trader Nicholas Biddle Sibley and his nephews Ebenezer and Peter Sibley under the name New Fayetteville. On November 12, 1828, Samuel Loyd built a log courthouse on what is now Main Street North in downtown Fayetteville; it was destroyed by a fire on December 10th, 1828. In 1830–31 Lieutenant Colonel John Chilton organized the Arkansas Militia under the command of Major General Gideon Welles to resist an attack by Mexican forces at Little Rock (now Little Rock), which resulted in one death and seven injuries among settlers in what became known as "The Mexican War". In 1840, Confederate General Robert Ewell established himself within days of Fort Smith after mistakenly believing that Fort Sumter had been taken by Union forces; he called for volunteers to march from all over Arkansas to join him there but only 1 percent responded because they thought they would be killed if they arrived too late or if their services would be Invalidated because their state did not secede from the United States. A force composed mainly of veterans reached Fort Smith on April 14th and soon discovered that Ewell had already withdrawn with most of his men north into Mexico; about 350 soldiers were left behind atFort Smith when hostilities ended two weeks later without any major fighting taking place between Confederate rebels and Union forces inside Texas proper – an event which some historians have claimed helped lead to success for Sherman’s army against Grant’s army during the Battle of Gettysburg four months later). On July 9th 1840 George Catlett erected a large brick building at Third Street Northeast near present-day Barnes Boulevard for use as a judge’s court house; it burned down in 1865 following a fire caused by lightning while being used as part of nearby cotton gin operations (the first instance thereof in Arkansas). In 1850 Isaac Newton Young organized what eventually became known as The Baptist Church movement here within plaza bounded on three sides by Broadway (now Exchange Place) NW and Court Avenue NW; he also built First Baptist Church northwest corner third street northeast then east side next to Masonic Temple where services still continue today despite changes made to plaza configuration several times since its original construction including adding an additional block south between Exchange Place NW & Court Avenue NW making seating available for up to 2,000 people when originally constructed).
