El Dorado is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 5,243 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County and home to many of the small town's residents. The name "El Dorado" comes from Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto's account of his trip through Arkansas in 1541-42, which referred to a vast gold country north of Mexico City that he had discovered on his way home from an embassy mission to Spain. The name stuck and gradually became attached to the whole area east of White Sands Lake as people realized that they could find vast amounts of gold here if they were willing to search for it specifically. Pulaski County was organized in 1835 out of parts of Benton and Pulaski Counties. The first post office opened in 1836 with Fayetteville as its address. That same year, El Dorado was surveyed by Jno Ewing and named after his nephew John D' elbow who had traveled downriver from St Louis with General James Kenedy during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1857, John Averell Harriman donated land at what is now downtown El Dorado for commercial development; this led to the construction of numerous buildings throughout downtown including Harriman Plaza which still stands today. In 1903, a railroad line ran through downtown El Dorado and began shipping goods out into Arkansas; this led to an increase in population and businesses along Railroad Street including several banks and grocery stores until Amtrak discontinued passenger service through Pulaski County in 1978 due to budget cuts. This decline led to increasing tension between white residents and black residents over participation in local government services; moreover, racial discrimination against African Americans became more rampant throughout much of Arkansas during this time period. As a result of these factors, el Dorado saw sporadic violence and vandalism throughout the 1930s before finally disappearing entirely from existence by 1940.
