The area that would become Conway was first settled by European Americans in 1836. In 1881, the citizens of Conway petitioned for incorporation as a town. On December 6, 1886, the Arkansas General Assembly passed an act incorporating Conway into Pulaski County. On January 2, 1907, the first town meeting in Conway was held. The present-day post office was established on November 17, 1912. The economy of Conway is based on agriculture and ranching. There are also several small businesses in the area which provide services to residents such as lawn care and groceries shopping. As one of Pulaski County's smallest towns, Conway has limited resources but does manage to maintain its unique character by its wide variety of cultural attractions including art galleries and theaters; a well-preserved historical district; a significant number of antique shops; and two golf courses providing opportunities for locals and visitors to enjoy some great competition while still remaining within easy driving distance of most major metropolitan areas

By 1880, the town had developed into a small farming community with one store and two schools. In 1906, the first post office in Conway opened; it served the community until 1959. Today, Conway is known for its agriculture products such as corn, soybeans, cotton and hay; its tourist attractions including the Cottonwood State Park Museum and Nature Preserve; and its role in Arkansas history as the county seat of Pulaski County from 1876 to 1960.
