Camden is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,423 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–Springdale–Temple City, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. Camden is located on the Arkansas River and its ZIP Code is 62002. The first people to live in Camden were Native Americans. They built their villages around trading posts where they gathered goods from all over the region. By 1810, most of the natives had died from white invasions and diseases brought over by settlers who followed buffalo herds across the plains into Arkansas Territory. In 1812, General John Custer's cavalry reached Camden while campaigning against Kiowa and Comanche Indians near present-day Oklahoma City. After killing many of these tribesmen and taking their horses and supplies, Custer's army marched through Camden on their way back to Fort Hays in Kansas Territory. As new settlements grew up along the Arkansas River between what is now Camden and Springdale (now called North Little Rock), riverboats transported goods upstream to be unloaded on or off land adjacent to each settlement for storage or transportation downriver to local markets orexport points downstream on the Missouri River. These days there are few physical reminders of how this important economic artery functioned during those early days; however an oral history collected by James Fenton in his book "Arkansas: A History" traces some key events that occurred during this period including: -In 1827 a ferryboat called "The Garter" was launched east of Camden on the Arkansas River carrying passengers and cargo between Springdale upstream and Sharpville downstream -In 1828 a steamboat named "The Phenix" arrived at Camden from Cairo with 524 barrels of oilseed oil being landed there -In 1830 a wagon road led south from Springdale along both banks of the Arkansas River before turning west towards Bigby Ferry Landing where it crossed overland to reach Deadwood Creek belowpresent-day Pinnacle Valley -In 1831 a wagon road leading southwest from Springdale paralleled what is now First Street within boundaries then turned southeast towards Second Street which served as main street until about 1840 when it became known as Main Street again due to its alignment with US Highway 22 following service roads running parallel thereto –By 1840 most commercial activity had ceased because travel by water was no longer practical given development within walking distance inland
