In 1905, Cecil Easley organized a Methodist church on what is now Elm Street between US 71 and US 70A east of wherepresent day Camden Elementary School stands. The first services were held on October 8th which was also the date that Webster Grovesuning Company laid out their street grid for town streets During World War II, Camden served as an ammunition dump for nearby Fort Searcy which became known as "The Arsenal". The munitions stored there included thousands of rounds of artillery ammunition and mortar rounds that caused environmental damage over time such as sedimentation within water tables which has resulted in estuary restoration by the municipality since 2006 . Also during World War II, many businesses closed due to wartime rationing but reopened after the war when available resources allowed

It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The town was named after Camden, England. The first person to live in what is now Camden was James Hargrave, who settled there in 1907. At that time it consisted of only a few acres of land around the water mill which had been built by his father-in-law Wm. Fenton some years earlier. The first post office in Camden was established on July 1, 1907; it remained open until 1959. In 1908, the city of Camden annexed part of neighboring Union City and became its own municipality; this annexation did not take place until 1909 due to a legal loophole which allowed for municipalities to be created without taking into account the number of residents within their original boundaries

The town was named after General James Camden, the commander of Confederate forces in the Western Arkansas Campaign during the American Civil War. The first permanent settler in Camden was George H. Smith, who arrived in 1865 and set up a tannery and farm. The town grew quickly, with residents coming from all over Arkansas and Missouri to find work at the new mill and store openings. In 1872, Camden built its first schoolhouse, which served as a community center until it burned down in 1916. In 1870, Camden began construction on what is now its first courthouse, which opened in 1871. It soon became one of the most important local landmarks in the town.
