Camden is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Camden is the county seat of Pulaski County. The city lies along I-30 and Arkansas Highway 356, just east of the Little Rock–Jefferson City metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Camden was James McNaughton in 1853. The community took its name from Camden County, England where it was founded by American Revolutionary War veterans as a means to avoid being confused with nearby Jefferson City. This early town grew slowly due to lack of available land and their own resources until 1861 when Confederate soldiers burned down the original courthouse and all other buildings in what is now downtown Camden after unsuccessfully protesting Union efforts to annex the town into Jefferson City. In 1865 localResidents decided to rename themselves Camden following a recommendation from General John Jarratt who commanded Union forces during the war. In 1870 John Hagen began operating a store on Main Street that became an important factor in development of the community which included two churches – First Baptist (founded 1871) and Methodist (founded 1875). Of note are also three banks which opened around this time: First National Bank (1876), Second National Bank (1878), and Third National Bank (1902). By 1925 there were 15 businesses in Camden with over 100 employees accounting for half of all economic activity within that year; however, during World War II only eight businesses closed because they were unable to find wartime production quotas across America required them to close their doors but instead focus on munitions manufacturing or Below Top Secret projects like radar construction or weather modification. Harlem Park Shopping Center opened adjacent to First Baptist Church in 1957 followed by Five Points Mall located just east of centerline on US Highway 36 later that same year becoming one of the most popular shopping areas for natives/ transplants throughout central Pulaski County particularly because it featured large discounts on items shipped directly from major retailers nationwide including Sears & Roebuck as well as more than twenty local clothing stores including Ziegfeld's Follies! It was founded in 1881 by a party of farmers who drove out a group of Cherokee Indians. The name "Camden" comes from an early settler named John Camden. The town site was chosen because it had fertile land and good water supply. The first store was built on the present-day corner of Elm and Center Streets in 1881. A post office was established in 1882, and the town quickly grew into a bustling community with several businesses including a hotel, grocery store, blacksmith shop, livery stable, schoolhouse and several churches. In 1916 Camden became one of 10 townships within Pulaski County to become part of the newly created Arkadelphia Micropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). In that year it also attained city status as its own municipality under the leadership of Mayor Bessie Fields. During World War II Camden saw increased activity as many Arkadelphia residents enlisted to fight overseas. The economy rebounds following the war but has since declined due to changes inArkadelphia's demographics since then such as loss of manufacturing jobs and suburban development around town limits
