Camden, Arkansas is a small town in the Ozarks of central Arkansas. The population was 2,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1876 by farmers who arrived from England and Ireland. They named it Camden after their place of origin, Camden County in Pennsylvania. The first school was built on what is now Main Street. In 1887, the town had a post office and two churches: First Baptist and Methodist. In 1907, Camden incorporate as a city with a population of 1,500 people. That year saw the construction of the first high school in Camden which became known as Central High School. In 1912, Camden hosted its first annual fair which featured exhibits from all over Arkansas and Missouri. The Great Depression hit Camden hard in 1930-31 with unemployment reaching 30%. However, business started to rebound during World War II when many residents enlisted in the military or took jobs available at local factories manufacturing munitions and other war materials. Afterward, joblessness declined again until the early 1990s when growth resumed due to new housing developments and other economic expansions throughout southern Arkansas
