Cabot was a small town in eastern Arkansas for over 60 years. It is now part of the Johnson City, Tennessee area. The town was founded in 1881 by John Cabot, a descendant of English navigator Edmund Halley. The name comes from the French word "cabo" meaning "path or track." John Cabot arrived in what is now Arkansas in 1841 and started trading goods with the Comanche Indians. He became interested in exploring new Territory west of the Mississippi River and decided to settle there. In 1853 he organized a party to survey the area, which resulted in his landing on an uninhabited island near modern-day Cabot. He named it after himself and developed a small settlement around it. In 1865, John Cabot's grandson, James Hogg, came to Arkansas and started trading here as well. By 1870, Cabot had become one of the most important towns in eastern Arkansas because of its position at the mouth of the Little River (now known as Arkadelphia Road). 2
