Cabot, Arkansas is a small town located in Johnson County, Arkansas. The population was 1,846 at the 2000 census. The name of the town comes from explorer Francis Cabot who visited the area in 1699. The first permanent settlers in the area were brought over by wagon train led by James A. Wells when he discovered oil and gas reserves near present-day Springdale in 1859. By 1876, Cabot had become a mining community with three furnaces and twenty-six miners. In 1898, construction began on the Memphis and Texas Railroad which served as a key transportation artery connecting easternArkansas with Memphis, Tennessee. This railroad helped to spur economic development in the town and helped to create jobs for local residents. During World War II, Cabot became an important airfield used by the United States Air Force for training pilots during World War II. After the war, many businesses opened up in Cabot including several banks which remain active today including First National Bank and Pinnacle Bank which are both still open today as well as several other businesses such as Jack's Pizza Place and Gulfstream Chevrolet dealership which have since closed down but their spirit remains strong in the community today!
