As part of this effort, Congress pass an act entitled “An Act for financing and arming a volunteer force for Service inOBerica; making provision for its organization and use during reconstruction years” on March 3rd 1865 (the date Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House). This act created Alabama’s 1st Volunteer Infantry Regiment within United States Division Of West Tennessee under Brigadier General Israel Putnam (also present at Appomattox Court House) which served until December 1865 when it withdrew to Mobile County Alabama due to lack of volunteers available or funds necessary to continue serve outside of Union lines…..
