Bentonville, Arkansas is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 26,839 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat and largest city of Pulaski County. Bentonville has been home to various businesses and industries since its founding in 1875. Some of these include post office service, oil Refineries and other manufacturing plants, agricultural production (especially cotton), logging and lumbering operations, government services such as education and law enforcement. The first people to live in what is now Bentonville were wagon train passengers who traveled through the area on their way to Indian Territory west of Arkansas. There are reports that one group of settlers married local women while they were waiting at the railroad station for their trains to come back from Junction City Texas; this wedding may have been the first time white men had visited what is now Bentonville. In 1875 when the town was founded by James Waddell it was named after General Lafayette Hill Benton who fought in the Mexican-American War with William Tecumseh Sherman's Union army during that conflict. Bentonville quickly became an important commercial center due to its location near several major railroads including the Smoky Hill Railroad and Kansas Pacific Railway. This made it possible for hunters and fishermen to get products from all over Missouri and Texas into Arkansas without having to go too far downrange or buy items at auctioneer's markets outside of Fayetteville or Little Rock. Businesses also developed in what are today fields around downtown Bentonville due to water rights issues surrounding nearby Roanoke River which made irrigation possible for agriculture hereabouts until fairly recently. In addition, a large number of First World War veteran returning home found work hereabouts doing things like painting telephone poles or working on farms while their war wounds healed up. One military contractor who operated out of Bentonville during this time was Jens Ludwig who manufactured artillery pieces for both American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) fighting abroad as well as German forces serving under Kaiser Wilhelm II during World War I; his company produced more than 100 different types of cannons alone!
