Bentonville is a city in Arkansas, United States. The population was 27,236 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Benton County. The town site was chosen by General John J. Pershing for his new military post on the Arkansas River in November 1916 following his victory over Mexican forces at Poteau Pass near Topeka, Kansas on October 22 that year. The name Bentonville comes from an American anti-slavery campaigner and Congressman James W. Benton who fought in the Civil War and died at Fort Snelling in 1885 after suffering a mental illness which he called "white heat." The first settler in what is now Bentonville was George Armstrong Cranch who arrived with his family from Illinois in 1836. He served as U.S. congressman from 1840 to 1851 and as governor of Illinois from 1853 to 1861 before moving to Arkansas where he became senator from 1862 to 1865 under Abraham Lincoln before dying at age 73 years old in 1865 while serving as ambassador to Russia under President Andrew Johnson - one of only two Americans ever sentenvoy into Russia during that time period (the other being Henry Clay). In 1886, Samuel Morse founded the first radio station west of the Mississippi River when he leased land east of downtown Bentonville from Ralston Jesse Cox for $5 per month/year; it would be located on Cox's home lot until 1902 when construction began on First National Bank Building which would remain standing until destroyed by fire in 1957; it replaced an earlier building which housed a grocery store and saloon also located on Cox's lot next door still standing today across Main Street from Masonic Temple (now known as Pentecostal Church) also built between 1902-1902 approximately 8 blocks northeast of downtowns original location now occupied by First National Bank building once again stood across Elm Street opposite Methodist Episcopal Church second oldest extant structure still standing within 2 blocks of current location inside current pentecostal church
