Bentonville, Arkansas is a city in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The population was 452 at the 2010 census, up from 369 at the 2000 census. It is included in the Little Rock–North Little Rock–South Little Rock metropolitan area. The first settlement in Bentonville was made by Isaac Benton and his family on May 26, 1827. He founded what became known as "Bentonville Plantation" on a tract of land granted to him by President James K. Polk in September 1928 as part of the New Deal program called "The Great Plains Plan". The town was named after Isaac's uncle George Washington Benton, who had settled near Jacksonville, Florida two years earlier and become one of America's leading cotton merchants. During World War II, Bentonville played an important role in military production through its affiliation with both Boeing Aircraft and United Ballistics Laboratory (UBL), which manufactured munitions for the war effort. In 1957, it became home to United States Military Academy Preparatory School (USMAP) when USMAP moved from West Point into newly constructed facilities across Center Street from downtown Bentonville; USMAP remains an all-male institution to this day.amidst other cultural attractions such as music venues and art galleries that have cropped up around town over time such as local breweries and theaters, there has been little attempt by locals to promote any specific entity or event beyond occasional street festivals or farmer's markets throughout the year
Bentonville was founded in 1873 by J.P. Benton and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after Major General John P. Benton who had fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. The first store was built in 1875 and the first post office opened in 1880. In 1907, the city received its charter from Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus and began to grow rapidly with population growth reaching 100,000 by 1910. By 1919, Bendonville had become a city with a population of 300,000 people and it had also become an important center for education with over 20 schools operated by the city government. By 1923, Bendonville had annexed the neighboring towns of White Settlement and Northwest City as well as parts of Holden which made up what is now Fort Smith suburb of Bentonville
The Arkansas Air National Guard's (AANG) 9th Airlift Wing transported a Christmas gift to Bentonville, AR on Dec. 15. The AANG's 9th Airlift Wing delivered four Boeing 727-200 aircraft and their cargo of holiday items to the Bentonville Municipal Airport. The gift was an air force deployed gift, which includes gifts for active duty service members and their families as well as children in the military and their families. "Our gesture is significant because it shows our support for our troops," said Col. Walt Hobbs, Commander of the 9th Airlift Wing. "It is also a great way to show appreciation for all that our troops go through each year." The AANG's donation will help improve the lives of servicemen and women in the United States by providing them with gifts they can use ornaments, hats, sweaters, games and other supplies to keep them warm during this holiday season.
