Benton, Arkansas is a small town located in Little Rock County, Arkansas. The population was 2,821 at the 2000 census. Benton is one of the oldest towns in Little Rock County and has been inhabited by people since 1820. The name "Benton" comes from the Creek Indian word "benta." It was given to a community on the north side of Arkoma River between what is now Benton Park and Sapping Springs. By 1868, most of what is today Benton had developed and by 1870 it had a post office and two stores. When Arkansas became a state in 1896, Benton became part of Pulaski County. In 1907, it was consolidated with neighboring Community First National Bank The cotton gin that stands today on Main Street in Benton was built by John Fitch about 1885. This gin helped to drive away some of the competition that came to Benton as a result of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest's efforts to get cotton picked in Arkansas during the American Civil War. The first store in Benton opened its doors on May 9th, 1892. At first there were only four settlers living here: James Ahern (who operated an agricultural store), Andrew McNaught (a tailor), David Rankin (a farmer) and John Hines (a carpenter). By 1908 there were twelve businesses operating here including three general stores, four saddleries, six groceries/poultry houses, two hotels/motels - one owned by J P Morgan - twenty-six blacksmiths licensed for work within five miles of town limits and thirty-six mechanics licensed for work within five miles; also present were eighty-four school teachers who officiated at public schools throughout Little Rock County; twenty-eight automobile dealers; eleven insurance agents; seven bankers...In 1911 Methodist Episcopal Bishop Driggs organized a church which served this area until 1916 when it joined an affiliated congregation led by Reverend Harold Crouch at Hope Chapel #2 near downtown Little Rock...Since then much progress has been made both spiritually and physically within our community but we still face many challenges such as housing needs & lack thereof especially for young families
