Benton has two churches – First Baptist Church which opened in 1893 and Second Baptist Church which opened in 1924. Benton, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,831 at the 2010 census. Benton was organized on November 3, 1907. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The first settlers to Benton were three families from Illinois who arrived in 1871. The name "Benton" was chosen by the post office officials because it sounded like a place where things would not naturally break or bend. The first store in Benton was established in 1876 and soon became known for its quality produce and retail goods. The post office moved to Benton from Rogersville on October 10, 1907. At that time, it contained only a few buildings and had a population of just nine people. One of the pioneers in Benton was Mrs. Anna Muhlenberg who founded the first grocery store in what is now downtown Benton with her husband Jacob Muhlenberg in 1910. With growth came new infrastructure including an education system which included both public and private schools until 1943 when statehood made school funding independent of federal money formulas
Benton was organized in 1836 as a town in Webster County, Arkansas. It was named for General John Benton, who served as the first governor of Arkansas. The population of Benton grew to over 1,000 people by 1840. In 1853, Benton became the capital of Arkansas.
