Arkadelphia is part of the Little Rock–Jefferson City Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the county seat for Pulaski County. The first settler in what is now Arkadelphia was James Denton who arrived in 1800 from Kentucky. He built a cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River and named it Dentonville after himself and his father-in-law, Hugh Fenton. In 1802, Phebe Green moved to Arkadelphia from her home near modern day Pine Bluff, Arkansas with her two children and their parents John Aiken (1767-1841) and Eliza Aiken (1768-1847). She married Phebe's brother David Green (1759-1824) in 1802. David had emigrated to America in 1779 with his family from Scotland via Lewisburg, PA. They first located at Mount Carmel east of present day Pine Bluff and then relocated to what is now Arkadelphia in 1802 when they built their house on land that later became known as "Denton Place". In 1807 they added a second home which became known as "Greene House". In 1814 there were only three families residing within the town limits: David Green & wife + six slaves; John Aiken & wife + four slaves; Eliza Aiken & husband + two slaves; all other residents were either free or slave owners/employees of one or more masters outside of town limits
