The Arkansas Air National Guard (AAFNG) is one of the United States military's primary air defense forces. It was established on 1 July 1947 as a result of the American Civil War and has since been responsible for providing aerial protection for all of Arkansas. The AAFNG also operates an aeronautical research center located in Arkadelphia, AR, which conducts research in support of air force operations. The AAFNG traces its origins to World War I when the Arkansas Militia Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized. After the war, manyArkansans decided to become soldiers and joined the armed forces. In 1917, the state legislature authorized formation of a branch of the militia called the Aero Club Force (ACF). The ACF became operational on 10 October 1917 and participated in various actions during World War I. The organization disbanded following the war but was reactivated again in 1923 as part of a statewide effort to arm citizens against communism. At this time, membership consisted only of men over 21 years old who had completed at least three months' training in piloting an airplane or flying instruction from a certified instructor. In 1935, Major General Edwin Erskine donated land northwest of Arkadelphia for use as an Aeronautical Experimental Range (AER). This range served as a proving ground for new aircraft designs and helped to develop what would become known as the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter plane. In 1941, after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and America entered World War II, President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered Congress to create an air arm within the army called "the Army Air Forces." On 17 June 1942, Lieutenant General Henry Halsey assumed command of "Army Air Forces Pacific" which became element number 3rd Wing at Hickam Field Hawaii; Headquarters U.S. Army Air Forces were activated at Maxwell Field Alabama on 15 December 1942 under Lieutenant General Arnold becoming Deputy Commander-in-Chief Central European Theater by order dated 15 December 1942 with Headquarters UNAVC activated at Grosseto Italy on 11 January 1943 with Colonel William Crippen appointed Commandant USAAF Europe Military District No 1 effective 12 January 1943 controlling all elements assigned thereto including HQ RAF Bomber Command/Gruppe 2 operated from Toulouse France by Lt Col Arthur Tedder until relieved by Lt Col Raymond Jinkins 5 March 1944 when he moved his headquarters from Toulouse France to Arkadelphia AFB where he remained until relieved by LtCol James Webb 9 April 1945 effective 30 April 1945 Maj Gen Edwin Erskine donation left behind Aeronautical Experimental Range & Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes
