Captain Sutter named this area after his sister's family who were from the town of Soquel, California. After his exploration trip ended in 1849,Captain Sutter returned to Tucson and continued naming locales as he found them- for example La Higuera became Pima County seat in 1853 and Tecate took over as county seat in 1861. Sierra Vista is a town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,867 at the 2010 census. It is named after Mount Whitney, which overlooks the town. The first post office in Sierra Vista opened on July 10, 1885. The current post office building was built in 1905 and is a two-story wood frame structure with a gable roof and Italianate styling. The building has been owned by the same family since it was built. It served as the seat of Pinal County until 1912 when then-Pinal County Mayor John Dickey moved his county government to Tucson. In 1907 mining engineer Jens Jensen organized what would become known as the "Arizona Mining Company" to prospect for coal and silver in what are now Sierra Vista and Nogales Counties. The company leased land from ranchers around present-day Sierra Vista and began striking coal blocks from an area that today includes much of Nogales City limits. In 1914 Jensen sold his interest in the company to George Washington Coker who operated it until 1919 when he sold it to Humble Oil & Gas Corporation which became part of Mesquite Petroleum Corporation before being taken over by Texaco Incorporated in 1985. Most of present day Sierra Vista dates back to when Tucson annexed some of Pinal County in 1912 under then-Mayor John Dickey's efforts to make Tucson into a more metropolitan city while still preserving rural character (see below). Prior annexation actions date back several years earlier; on January 12, 1909 Tucson incorporated parts of Cochise Co., including all or part of present day Sierra Vista east of Umatilla Creek (the creek runs through downtown Tucson). At that time there were only three settlements located within Cochise County: Myra (now Vernal), White Sands (now Goodyear) and San Carlos(now Phoenixville). On October 7, 1912 President Taft signed legislation creating Cochise County out of portions of Pima Apache Indian Nation eastward from Umatilla Creek inclusive; this included all or part of present day Sierra Vista north thereof including what would become its eastern border extending past today's city limits into Oro Valley Co.(or more properly Village Of White Sands/Nogales) beyond which lay Maricopa Indian Territory proper - thus effectively annexing most if not all present day areas west and southward upriver from #6 Road running concurrently through White Sands along Umatilla Creek inclusive unincorporated territory comprising much modern Alpine Valley communities north thereof prior both smallpox epidemics ravaging these regions during those years leading many settlers fleeing southward towards Yuma rather than stay put during periods where disease control seemed difficult or impossible given available resources pre-phone technology
