The history of the Coast Guard in Sierra Vista, Arizona dates back to 1885. The first Coast Guard station in the area was established at Fort Yuma. By 1912, there were four Coast Guards stations operating in and around Sierra Vista: one at the old Ranger Station, one on High Street, one on Pecos Road, and one at the current site of the old post office. In 1924, a small pier was built near present-day Pecos Road to provide access to Lake Havasu City for boating and fishing purposes. In 1933, a large hangar and barracks were erected on land adjacent to the existing ranger station on High Street. The new Headquarters Building was completed in 1936 and served as headquarters for all Coast Guard stations until 1974 when it became Headquarters for Sector 5 (Arizona). The original Fort Yuma garrison was replaced by an additionalFortYuma Garrison unit in 1951 which consisted of a detachment of Lifeguards from Point Loma lighthouse. This detachment remained operational until 1969 when it was transferred to Alta Linda Naval Air Station where it continued operation as part of Helicopter Squadron One until its divestiture in 1987. After years of being without an active duty command center for their sector 5 jurisdiction Area A (Sierra Vista) personnel began organizing themselves into detachments or groups different than those stationed at their former garrison locations with divergent mission areas including law enforcement; search and rescue; explosives detection; marine patrol; fire prevention/extinguishment operations; public information officer service (PIO); traffic control measures; environmental protection operations; medical response services . It is interesting to note that each detachment operated independently prior to unification into single units under Headquarters Sector 5 during the early 1990's Each group had specific missions assigned them such as Search And Rescue Squad 3 Detachment 1 operating out of Main Gate Post Office - providing cover fire while evacuating citizens stranded atop Mount Lemmon during an earthquake televised evacuation ; Traffic Control Squad 4 Detachment 2 providing direction while driving through heavy snow drifts caused by winter weather conditions that closed State Route 66 between Tucson and Phoenix ; Marine Patrol Unit 3 Detachment 2 conducting patrols along both coasts within limits set forth by Department Of Defense regulations governing UAV activity ; Environmental Protection Squadron 9 detached from Headquarters Sector 5 HQ location approximately 1993-1996 conducted various water quality monitoring activities aboard several large Marina boats located off shore near Shiprock NM.; Medical Response Team 2 Group provides support ambulance services during natural disasters with helicopters working co-ordinated routes from Escondido Hospital serving University Medical Center patients . The name Sierra Vista comes from the Spanish word "sierra" meaning mountain or range and "vista" meaning view. The community was founded in 1880 by Mormon settlers as a farmstead on Cottonwood Creek east of what is now Scottsdale. In 1902, it became a post office under the name of Sierra Vista and remained that way until 1959 when it became an incorporated town with its own government. According to the 2010 census, residents of Sierra Vista are made up of 66% Native American citizens and 34% non-Hispanic white citizens. Hispanic or Latino residents make up 5%. Of all adults in Pinal County who were at least 25 years old in 2000, 82% identified themselves as Hispanic or Latino. The economy of Sierra Vista is based largely on agriculture which includes raising livestock and beans for human consumption; retail sales (including small businesses); and tourism which generated $2 million in revenue during 2008 according to local officials. Other major industries include construction (+1%) and manufacturing (+2%).

The name comes from Spanish "sierra" meaning "high mountain," and "vasquez" meaning "ranch." Sierra Vista was founded in 1885 as a station on the Southern Pacific Railroad. The first post office in Sierra Vista was established in 1886. It changed its name to Sierra Vista in 1889 when it became a town. In 1912, the first school opened in Sierra Vista. The first store was established in 1920 and the first telephone line was developed here in 1923. In 1951, the first motel opened here and also the first hospital here. In 1957, construction began on what would become known as Death Valley National Park which included parts of present-day Utah and Arizona. At this time, much of present-day Cochise County had been acquired by Tucson for that purpose In 1960, President John F Kennedy visited Sierra Vista while on his way to Phoenix for his inauguration ceremony On October 14th of that year an avalanche destroyed most of the Adobe Walls Lodge near downtown due to heavy snowfall during wintertime; this event left behind an lasting legacy of tourism with people coming from all over just to see/experience this natural wonder

In 1916, the United States Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act, which called for the creation of a military reservation in Arizona to provide land for troops stationed in World War I. Sierra Vista was one of the first towns in Arizona to be on the reservation. In 1940, during World War II, Sierra Vista became an air base for the Navajo Air Force. The town also served as a prisoner of war camp from 1945 to 1948. In 1957, when Phoenix metropolitan area was created, Sierra Vista became part of that area. In 1979, after years of planning and construction, Sierra Vista's first high school opened doors to students. Today there are more than 20 schools in Sierra Vista Unified School District - making it one of Arizona's largest school districts.
