The first people to live in what is now Sedona were Paiute Indians who used the area for hunting and gathering. In 1867 Spanish traders founded the Santa Fe Railway here and began bringing goods to Prescott from Pueblo de Taos in New Mexico. A post office called "Sedona" was established in 1881; it changed hands several times before becoming part of the Navajo Nation in 1912. The post office closed in 1945 but Sedona has had a school since 1870 (Poncho School District #2). In 1911 Wm Hite developed land hereabouts which he sold to Chicago banker George O'Leary for $1 million dollars ($10 million today). O'Leary built one of the largest hotels west of the Rockies—the White Sands Resort—and spent lavishly on cultural events throughout Arizona and northern Mexico during his era as governor of Arizona (1911-1920). One result was that Sedona became known as "The Gateway To Mexican America." A second generation of American entrepreneurs followed Wm Hite: controls by Oilseed Industries opened up new opportunities for agriculture here while also enjoying access to oil resources that had been discovered off-road by Pioneer energy men Harry Fenton Seagrave and John Wesley Powell near this area back then too In 1961 Robert McCloskey organized an effort seeking annexation or incorporation into Phoenix so that he could control allsedone's major shopping center anchored by Sears Roebuck & Co.—a move thwarted even though McCloskey lived eastside until his death at age 95 years old sedonedetected Edmond Jarry's 1951 novel "Curse Of The Bighorn" set among Navajos living on Acoma Island outside Albuquerque NM
