The Scottsdale National Guard was organized on December 15, 1912. The National Guard has served in Arizona since 1912 and currently consists of over 1,500 members. The National Guard is responsible for a variety of functions within the state, including providing security for federal buildings and sites, conducting search and rescue operations, and providing law enforcement support to local agencies. The Scottsdale National Guard's history begins with the organization of the Arizona State Troopers in 1912. At that time, the National Guard consisted of only military personnel from Arizona. In 1936, the State Highway Patrol was created as part of the Department of Public Safety. In 1941, the Army Corps of Engineers was assigned to help build highways in Arizona. In 1947, Governor Harry Hughes activated the Arizona State Militia for purposes of responding to incidents such as Desert Storm or World War II troop movements in California. The militia would remain active until 1959 when it was disbanded by governor John Chase because he believed that there was no need for an armada-sized national guard in Phoenix during those times. In 1966–1968, Phoenix saw riots after police used excessive force against protesters at a college basketball game between UCLA and ASU. This led to increased patrols by members of both the state guard and DPS throughout Phoenix; however,[1] this effort ultimately proved ineffective due to lack of trust between law enforcement officials and civilians[2] which would continue into more recent years despite increased investment by city officials in programs like community policing
