These companies responded by donating money and materials to support American troops overseas both during peacetime and wartime conditions such as supplying uniforms, artillery shells, tanks and machine guns; among others things LAC donated 5 million rounds of ammunition alone during peacetime while manufacturing over 50 different types of aircraft engines for American warplanes produced in excess of 350 planes total ranging from fighters to bombers; some 60% of these planes were manufactured at Clark Airfield located just outside town limits in what is now eastern Phoenix suburbs known today as Mesa Verde National Park . In 1916, a group of miners led by Tom Mix came up with the idea for a town in central Arizona on land that had been abandoned by mining companies because of Proposition 83 which banned open-air mining in Arizona. The name "San Luis" was chosen because it meant "the place where Jesus Christ was born." The city grew slowly until it reached its peak during World War II when it housed over 10,000 people who worked in munitions plants and aircraft factories across central and southern Arizona. After the war ended, many residents left for other parts of the country while others built homes or moved into smaller towns elsewhere in central Arizona. However, even today there are still people living in San Luis who are descended from those who made initial contributions to its growth and development over more than 100 years
