Queen Creek was founded in 1847 as a cattle and sheep ranch by George Washington Cattleman. The area now known as Queen Creek was first inhabited by the Apache people. In 1868, Mormon settlers arrived in the area and began to establish homes and businesses. The first post office at Queen Creek was established in 1876. By 1907, the population of Queen Creek had reached 2,000 residents. In 1912, King Kamehameha I of Hawaii purchased approximately 3,000 acres (1 km2) of land north of Queen Creek for $5,000. This tract would become known as Kaʻū Districts Acres (now part of Phoenix). In 1916, King Kamehameha II donated an additional 1,500 acres (500 m2) to Queen Creek for development into a town called Kokomo. The town began to grow rapidly and by 1922 had reached 4,000 residents. On May 12, 1927, King Kalākaua donated another 3 miles (5 km) of land extending east from Kokomo to what is now the city of Phoenix to add more acreage for development into what would become Phoenix proper. This donation became known as the Valley Ranchland Grant and helped spurPhoenix's rapid growth during its early years. In 1932, Arizona Statehood occurred and Queens County was created within Phoenix County effective January 1st that year. As part of this change in government structure, Queens County developed its own governmental services including education and health care whilePhoenix continued to rely on county-owned facilities such as jails and fire stations until the late 1990s when these services were privatized entirely under successive Republican administrations culminating with Mayor Phil Bredesen's decision not to renew the contract for those services in 2013 despite heavy opposition from local business owners who alleged that they have been neglecting their properties because they are funded by county taxpayers rather than private investors).
