Prescott, Arizona is a town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,593 at the 2010 census. Prescott was founded in 1867 by George W. Prescott and named for him. It is located on the eastern edge of Pima County on the Gila River. The first permanent settler in Prescott was George W. Prescott, who arrived there in 1867 from New Mexico Territory. He built a cabin on what is now called Old Town Square and started trading with the local Apache people and other tribes near present-day Phoenix and Tucson. In 1870, he married Fannie Hanks and started a family with her; their daughter Selina became the first white woman to live in Prescott when she moved to town in 1875. The Prescotts played an important role in developing early Prescott as a railroad center because theyowned most of the land within its limits at that time. Prescott was founded in 1885 by John M. Prescott and named after his father, General George N. Prescott. The first post office in Prescott was established in 1886. The community developed around the county courthouse, which was built in 1902. The courthouse burned down in 1935, but the ruins remain today as a museum dedicated to Prescott's history. In 1912, Prescott became part of Pima County and was renamed for Ulysses S. Grant, who had served as President of the United States from 1856 to 1869 and as Governor of Arizona from 1861 to 1865. In 1925, Pima County merged with Maricopa County and Prescott became part of that new county again; it remains an unincorporated area today.
