Prescott, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona. It is located about 20 miles east of Phoenix and about 25 miles north of Tucson. The population was 1,845 at the 2000 census. Prescott was founded in 1867 by George W. Prescott as a trading post on the Gila River. In 1912, it became a city. In 1933, Prescott became the site of the first live television broadcast from Earth when TV station KHQD-TV (now KPNX) aired an all-day show from the old Hollywood Ranch Hotel. The original set and engineering were built by local man Hiram Silliman and his son Donnell Silliman. Prescott's history goes back to 1867 when George W. Prescott established a trading post on the Gila River near present-day Prescott Valley with his brother John Aikenbeck and their father Isaac Jourdan Prescott. George's grandson, Willard Parkinson Prescott, developed what is now downtown Prescott in 1916 during World War I while working for American Telephone and Telegraph Company as their representative in Europe; he named it "Palm Desert". In 1929,zonngs ABC affiliate KTAR moved its transmitter from Phoenix to Pasadena after owner KRBD sold KTAR to National Broadcasting Company for $1 million (the network had been created two years earlier). KTAR continued operations as an ABC outlet until May 2nd 1969 when KOJO switched affiliations with KRBD effective that date; KOJO began airing CBS programming until August 12th 1984 when KOJO switched affiliation with WTSP which would become Tucson's first major commercial broadcaster

The population grew rapidly during World War I, and the city reached its peak in 1920 with a population of over 100,000.
